Wednesday night at Via Funchal, São Paulo, was custom-made for fans. On stage, Cyndi Lauper proved once again that her thing is the interaction between artist, audience and vitality. It’s not an exaggeration to compare Cyndi’s concerts with the likes of Mick Jagger and Paul McCartney, for they have a similar showman energy.

* That’s how the charismatic Cyndi took the stage at 10:15 p.m. to showcase her album "Memphis Blues", which is full of sad songs and classics of the genre, such as "Rollin ‘and Tumblin’." And it was precisely then that the presentation didn’t seem to agree with the singer’s spirit. She is too lively, too euphoric, a firecracker.

* It’s not a joke. Cyndi couldn’t control herself and many times went into the crowd, all excited and in good spirits. When she played the hits of her career, Cyndi held nothing back – and neither did the audience, which ignored security and the VIP area to get to the stage. Cyndi’s only concern was with her fans’ safety and she asked Brazilian percussionist Lan Lan to say: “Don’t hurt yourselves” in Portuguese at least twice.

* In the very end, near midnight, Cyndi still wanted more. She said: "This is not a Frank Sinatra concert, you know. In fact, he’s dead already. I want everyone dancing." The fans got the message. It was to the sound of "Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” “Time After Time" and "True Colors" – sung practically a cappella, with sax player Leo Gandelman, Lan Lan’s tambourine, Cyndi’s gentle guitar strings and the public’s chorus that she closed the show. A treat for the fans.
