English born but rooted in Mexico City for 22 years, artist Melanie Smith has just arrived in Sao Paulo for the opening, on Thursday, of the "wall-eyed" exhibition at Nara Roesler Gallery. "I’m used to big cities. Of course the two places are very similar, the skyline, the traffic and the fact that they are both very urban," she said in an interview with Glamurama.
* In the chat, she said that much of her work is related to the urban aspect of global metropolises. In fact, she said she already took the time to check out the art scene in Sao Paulo: she visited exhibits at Galeria Vermelha, such as the collective Chelpa Ferro, and she loved it.
* In her show, Melanie shows – through videos, paintings, photographs and installations – her reading of large concrete structures built by the eccentric British aristocrat and writer Edward James between 1960 and 1984 in the Mexican city of Xilitla. Melanie is present in the Mexican pavilion at the Venice Biennale and is getting ready for her participation in the next Mercosur Biennial. On Wednesday, Daniel Roesler is throwing a dinner party for friends in honor to the artist.
