The presenter and model Caroline Ribeiro and Mariana Weickert, who were living in New York at the time of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, exactly ten years ago, talked to Glamurama about the terrible situation they went through and what happened to their lives afterwards.
* Carol was at home with her husband, two blocks from the WTC. She was just waking up when he heard the noise of the first plane crashing against the tower. "I followed the second strike with my husband on the TV. Shortly after that there was a blackout, and the building was evacuated by police. We walked through the West Side Highway, just following the flow. There were many fighters flying over the city. I wanted to throw myself into the river because I didn’t know if there would be another attack," says Carol, who even saw people jumping off the towers. "It was the worst thing I’ve ever seen n my life. I still have trouble with the images. "
* She took refuge at the home of her colleage Ana Claudia Michels and only managed to return to Brazil eight days later. After a month in the country, she went to Europe to take part in their fashion weeks. Then she returned to New York to the same apartment, with no fear. "Many people moved, but we decided to stay. I think the attack has affected the Americans more, it is their land, their family," she says. She only returned permanently to Brazil last year. "I participated in tributes to the victims there."
* Mariana Weickert was preparing to walk the catwalk for Oscar de la Renta, at New York Fashion Week when she received news of the attack. "The tents were evacuated. I, Raquel Zimmermann and Talytha Pugliesi ran and started following people. I thought it was the apocalypse, the world would come to an end. I’d only seen things like that in movies," she says.
* Just like Carol, Marina returned to Brazil as soon as she could and soon after that she was off to work in Europe. After the European season, she returned to New York. "I had to work, move on with my life," she says. She thinks the event hasn’t particularly changed her life, but it did change the world. "It created an atmosphere of apprehension around the globe. It was really very sad. "
