This weekend, Glamurama became BFF with Jean Paul Gaultier, who is in Rio to launch the documentary Jean Paul Gualtier, Quebrando as Regras" ("Jean Paul Gualtier, Breaking the Rules"). We talked to him twice, and had plenty to talk about. The designer, in fact, just loves a good conversation and isn’t shy about dealing with any issue. From the death of partner Francis Menuge of AIDS in 1990, to his preference for Madonna to Lady Gaga, and the bullying he suffered from a teacher as a child. Here, we share the highlights of the Gaultier crash course.
* Can you define yourself? “I don’t not like myself aesthetically, that’s why I think I make clothes. To make people beautiful, you know? I appreciate others. I have big ears, I really can’t stand the color of my hair, my skin, I have no eyebrow. Anyway, I’m all wrong. But I have some stories to tell, right? After all, it’s a 35-year long career! I want to be remembered for being open-minded, unprejudiced and yes, for having broken some rules. Especially in the fashion world.
