In the midst of New York Fashion Week, Dirk Standen, editor of Style.com, had a really cool chat with Carine Roitfeld, in which she talked very candidly about her past, present and future. "It’s strange for me to come back here to New York during the fashion show season and not to be the editor in chief of French Vogue. Of course, I’ve done it before when I was just a freelancer, but ten years is a long time," she said. This season, Carine decided to skip the fashion shows, and attend only the amfAR ball, meet with some friends and go to her son’s, Vladimir Restoin-Roitfeld, exhibit.
* In the interview, she also talked about the editorial changes at Vogue when she took the helm a decade ago. Before the magazine had a more journalistic focus, but she chose to center on fashion. She also talked about Jonathan Newhouse, chairman of Condé Nast International. “Jonathan was an amazing boss, because he let me do such crazy things. To put a black transsexual with a beard and high heels on the cover? I don’t think a lot of presidents will let you do that,” she said. Carine made a point of saying that there wasn’t fired, but instead reached an agreement that it was time to leave.
* Carine talked about the her partnership with Tom Ford – "No, no, I’m not going to work with Tom. That was ten years ago. If I look back at my CV, when I was freelance, I worked mostly ten years with Tom Ford at Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent. And after [that] I stopped and it was ten years at French Vogue. Now it’s a new decade and I don’t want to be doing what I was doing ten years ago.” She also talked about Mario Testino. It’s a really great interview that made us even more curious about the book she is writing about his career, which will be released later this year.
