Glamurama went to check out the concert for the DVD “United Kingdom of Ipanema,” on Thursday at Sesc Rio Noites Cariocas, on Mauá Pier, We thought the place was kind of empty. Especially because Andy Summers, guitarist of the Police, and Roberto Menescal would go onstage and play the best of bossa nova and The Police’s biggest hits. But it was much better this way. Most people sat on the ground near the stage, including Lenine and George Israel.
* Vik Muniz arrived a little late and left a little early and chose the comfort of the bleachers. He enjoyed the show with Oskar and Nazaré Metsavaht. “The last time the Police was here, Andy went to Osklen and loved the concept. So he wanted to name his project with Menescal ‘United Kingdom of Ipanema.’ I’ve been in since the beginning. I designed the DVD cover and am responsible for the costumes. Being here today is the icing on the cake,” said Oskar.
* With cameos by Fernanda Takai, Marcos Valle and Bossacucanova’s Cris Delanno, the concert was perfect. Menescal said that he met the guitarist after Andy heard Menescal’s version of Roxanne. In broken Portuguese, the Brit told the public: “O bicho vai pegar” (something like “Things are going to get hot”) and played “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic”. They also performed “Samba de uma Nota Só”, “O Barquinho”, “Chega de Saudade”, “Samba de Verão”, “Every Breath You Take”, “Message in a Bottle” and “De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da.”
* Exclusively, we exchanged a few words with Andy backstage. He told us he was worried because he’s had a sore throat and a high fever lately, but he was glad things worked out well. “I love Brazil. Really. The police jibes with bossa nova. Did you enjoy the show?” Words are unnecessary.
