Olivia Newton-John was a woman with a broken heart. In 2005, her boyfriend at that time, Patrick McDermott, was presumed dead after disappearing while fishing in California. The actress and singer, famous for musicals like "Grease" and the song "Xanadu," lived the mourning. Last year an even bigger disappointment: the United States police discovered that Patrick had forged his own death. A heartbroken woman, however, is now behind. Glamurama had an exclusive chat with Olivia, who performed at the Conrad Hotel and Casino in Punta del Este this weekend and believes that only love can heal a broken heart. See the interview below:
"Physical" was chosen as the sexiest song in history. How do you handle it? Do you consider yourself a sex symbol?
"No. Not at all. I was really surprised when I heard this story. Mainly, because I think it wasn’t very when I launched this song. I have a lot of fun with that."
You faced breast cancer and now entered the fight against the disease. How is this new battle?
"I’m building the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Centre in Melbourne, Australia. It’s not just a hospital to treat people with cancer. Over there people will be able to do meditation, acupuncture, yoga, to help the spirit. I want to help people to overcome this, as I did. I had this disease 18 years ago, it’s okay now. I’m healthy and happy. "
You’ve recently participated in the television show "Glee", singing alongside Jane Lynch. What do you want to focus now?
"Me and Jane laughed a lot together. I had the best time doing the participation, singing with her. You know, I have decided now I’ll only make things that I have fun with. I’m 62 and have done wonderful things, but I’m sure there are many others on their way. I want to paint, to develop jewelry, do creative things, because they keep happening and I am open to the universe – and that includes a show in Brazil, if I get invited. "
What is the cure for a broken heart?
"Love … I think having good friends that ensure you some good laughs and convey love. Every pain that you suffer is very important for your growth. You can bet on that. I grew up a lot recently. Now, no one is immune to this. If you know the healing for that, promise that you’ll tell me?
